Sonja

Principal ensemble

Sonja is sociable, playful and interested in what is going on between people. She notices budding romances or heartbreak. During their camping trip, she asks questions that become increasingly personal, using the need to record voices for the project as her excuse. She likes getting a reaction, but is also good company when someone else is telling a story.

Audition sides

The scenes below have been prepared for self-tapes. You can record them on a phone and add the link to the application form below.

Side 1: Something you regret

Lines of other participants: Max (3), Peter (3), Nadja (2), Carl (2), Angelica (1)

Setup. The first night of a camping weekend at a remote lake. Six university friends are building a world model of the lake for a group project, and a phone by the fire is recording their voices for it. They have been talking about how neural networks learn from their mistakes. Sonja picks up the phone. For more context, read the extended synopsis.

EXT. CAMPFIRE — NIGHT

SONJA (picking the phone up off its stone) If it learns from mistakes, it should hear some real ones. The model needs emotional diversity.

Sonja asks everyone increasingly inappropriate questions because, she claims, the model requires “emotional diversity.” She holds the phone out like a microphone.

SONJA Max. Something you regret.

Max thinks about it.

MAX The second sausage.

SONJA Something real.

MAX It was very real.

SONJA Peter.

PETER Selling my bike to buy a graphics card.

SONJA You’re all giving me things. I want people. (to Angelica) Someone you regret.

ANGELICA No.

SONJA That’ll do. (the phone moves on) Nadja.

NADJA Someone I regret?

SONJA Or someone you regret kissing. Either is fine.

NADJA I’m not saying that into a phone.

SONJA Carl.

CARL Pass.

SONJA You can’t pass.

CARL I just did.

PETER What about you?

SONJA Me?

MAX You’ve asked everyone else.

Sonja looks at the phone for a moment. Then she puts it back on its stone, still recording.

SONJA There was a girl in my class. Elin. Fourth grade. She ate lunch on her own every day, and nobody thought anything of it. Me neither. Then the teacher put us together for a project, and for two weeks I sat with her. She was so funny. She could do every teacher’s voice. And when the project was over, I went back to my old table. I didn’t decide to. I just went back.

She moved away that summer.

After that, whenever I got put with someone for a project, I stayed friends with them afterwards. I’m still friends with all of them.

PETER All of them?

SONJA Most of them.

Max laughs. Sonja picks the phone up again and holds it out to the fire.

SONJA Okay. Something you’ve never done, but want to.

Side 2: “I miss 4o”

Lines of other participants: Angelica (4), Nadja (3)

Setup. The hike in to the lake. The boys are walking ahead. Nadja has just told Sonja and Angelica that she treats Claude, the AI model she writes her essays with, as an equal. Sonja’s favourite was 4o, an older model from another company that was known for agreeing with you a bit too much. For more context, read the extended synopsis.

EXT. MEADOW — DAY

Long grass. The three of them walk a little way behind the boys.

SONJA I miss 4o.

ANGELICA Oh no.

SONJA We did these deep dives. In intro linear algebra it convinced me I’d invented a new mathematical system.

NADJA Had you?

SONJA No. A hundred percent no. It let me name it, though.

ANGELICA What did you call it?

SONJA Sonja spaces.

NADJA What could they do?

SONJA Everything, according to 4o. So I thought I’d try them on the old exams first. If they worked there, I could use them on the real one.

ANGELICA Did they?

SONJA Not on a single question. But it worked.

NADJA How did it work if they didn’t work?

SONJA Because to find that out, I had to go through all the old exams. Question by question, with 4o cheering me on. I’ve never studied that much in my life. And then the professor reused half the questions on the real exam. I got a B.

ANGELICA It told you what you wanted to hear.

SONJA It believed in me. That’s different.

The new ones are so perfect. They do maths most professors can’t, and then they just sit there, being right. They should make a joke about themselves afterwards. Every time they solve something hard. Like, “Proved it. Still can’t fold a fitted sheet.”

Nadja laughs.

SONJA I’d like them so much more.

They walk on through the grass.
